I'm an experienced spelling bee coach, with nine years of experience tutoring kids for success at the National Spelling Bee. I’ve tutored Anamika Veeramani (2010 NSB champion), Cole Shafer-Ray (3rd place, 2015), Sreeniketh Vogoti (7th place, 2016; Alex Iyer and Shruthika Padhy (7th place, 2017), Shourav Dasari (3rd place, 2017), Rohan Rajeev (2nd place, 2017), and many more high-ranking spellers.
I take on between four to six elite spellers – spellers with a demonstrated record of achievement and exceptional promise – for regular one-on-one coaching. After an initial session (billed at the same rate as regular lessons), I reserve the right to reject a speller for regular, long-term tutoring if I feel that they wouldn’t benefit sufficiently. Dependent on availability, I also offer one-off diagnostic tests and more ad hoc tutoring arrangements.
I use Skype for tutoring, and each lesson is an hour. First, I start off with a diagnostic test to assess what languages the speller is best at and what languages s/he needs work on. I usually give an oral review of the speller’s performance, and I can also send an e-mail enumerating, in more detail, his/her strengths and weaknesses.
We then go through languages of origin systematically, spending most of the time on Greek, Latin, French, Italian, German, and Spanish (the languages which tend to come up most at the Bee) and using my book Words of Wisdom: Keys to Success in the Scripps National Spelling Bee as a textbook and guide. How much time we spend on each language depends on how strong the tutee is at each one. We will also work on vocabulary, with a strong emphasis on being able to logically induce definitions based on Greek and Latin roots. Please contact me if you are interested in tutoring. I look forward to hearing from you!
